Welcome to Vienna, the enchanting capital of Austria, renowned for its rich history, imperial grandeur, and delectable culinary offerings. Some come to take in the exquisite architecture and palaces or even witness the city’s musical legacy. The Bros come for the döner and sweet treats.
Among its many culinary delights, one stands out as a true symbol of Viennese indulgence, the world-famous Sachertorte cake. And the best place to savor this iconic dessert? The legendary Sacher Hotel, the birthplace where it all began. In this blog, the Bros take you on a tantalizing journey through the city’s vibrant pastry scene. And how the famous dessert came to life as we explore the origins and divine taste of the original Sachertorte.
A Slice of History
Nestled in the heart of Vienna, the five-star Sacher Hotel has been a beacon of luxury and hospitality since 1876. Its story begins with Franz Sacher, a young apprentice, who in 1832 was tasked with creating a lavish dessert for Prince Metternich. Serving as the Chancellor of the Austrian Empire at the time, Metternich represented the center of the European balance and only the best would do for the leader of Europe’s superpower. A tall task for the 16-year-old Sacher.
Consequently, the chocolate masterpiece known as the Sachertorte was born. Little did this talented baker know, his creation would become a Viennese legend that would captivate the taste buds of generations to come.
Layered with Indulgence & Class
As you waltz through the doors of the Sacher Hotel, you’re instantly transported to a world of elegance and sophistication. The refined atmosphere has a classed-up feeling to it, but backpackers fear not, because as long as you’ve got a few Euros, anyone, including walk-ins are welcome. The coffee house sits opposite the rear of the State Opera House at one end of the pedestrianized part of Kärntner Straße.
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and chocolate lingers in the air, creating an irresistible allure. As you settle into a red velvet booth and take in the atmosphere of the hotel’s café, your anticipation builds for the moment when the famous Sachertorte arrives at your table. Now you’re living the high life.
🌎 BROS TIP: We splurged on the drink and cake combo for €20. You can select from hot chocolate, coffee, cappuccino, or a beverage of your choice. The deal also included sparking or mineral water. If you go for just a piece of cake, the price of a slice served at the table is €7.90. The smallest “Original Sacher-Torte” round cake costs €29 ($32) and despite how costly it is, Hotel Sacher ships about 360,000 of them worldwide every year.
Love a First Bite
At first glance, the Sachertorte appears as a work of art—a flawless masterpiece with its glossy, dark chocolate glaze, neatly encasing two layers of light, moist chocolate sponge cake. This ain’t Betty Crocker we’re talking about here. These ingredients are the best of the best. The deal is sealed with a stamp of solid chocolate embossing on the cake’s original logo, which is carefully placed on top.
A generous layer of apricot jam, the secret ingredient, adds a delightful tanginess that perfectly balances the richness of the chocolate. To round out the palette and complete the composition, your slice is served with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream. Not too sweet, not too sugary, each bite is rich and smooth, offering an exquisite symphony of flavors.
A Timeless Wien Tradition
The Sachertorte has become an integral part of Viennese culinary heritage, and the Sacher Hotel continues to uphold the tradition with unwavering dedication. Their master bakers meticulously follow Franz Sacher’s original recipe to the tee, ensuring that every slice carries the same refined taste that has delighted dessert enthusiasts for over a century. Whether you’re into sweets or not, that’s a commitment anyone can appreciate.
While the Sachertorte is undeniably the star of the show, the Sacher Hotel’s café also offers a delightful array of decadent Viennese pastries and desserts. From the delicate Apfelstrudel, which is basically an apple streusel, and the tempting Kaiserschmarrn, a version of a lightly sweetened pancake, there is something to satisfy every sweet tooth. For drinks, try the Viennese iced chocolate or even the option to add a liquor to your coffee if you’re feelin’ frisky.
🌎 BROS TIP: The Sachertorte experience, of course, comes with a price tag. Years ago when we were broke backpackers, we purchased the bite-sized version. The original Sacher cube costs €6.90 a piece. This mini version of the iconic cake has the perfect bite of chocolate-to-jam ratio. We recommend this as a great takeaway option or for travelers on a budget to get a taste of the good stuff.
Sachertorte Takes the Cake
Vienna’s Sachertorte is more than just a cake. It’s a testament to the city’s culinary prowess and a slice of history that continues to captivate locals and visitors alike. Indulging in this legendary cake at the Sacher Hotel is a dessert experience like no other.
So, the next time you find yourself in Wein, stop by the hotel and treat your tastebuds to a tradition. Let the sumptuous flavors of the Sachertorte transport you to Vienna’s golden years and a world of pure chocolate bliss.
