5. Observe the Alms Ceremony

Get up early, like 5 am early. If you don’t hit snooze and are able to witness Tak Bat, be respectful, be quiet, and put your camera away. The purpose of the ceremony is so that monks from nearby monasteries can collect food for the day. Participate only if it’s meaningful to you, not just to take photos, as people say tourists have ruined this sacred ceremony.

If you participate, be ready to give the monks food, rice from the morning market, or possibly something packaged (not from the food stall on the monk’s route). This tradition is over 600 years old and a unique experience, don’t be that cringy tourist. Better yet, go with a local guide, and participate properly.

6. Explore the Buddha Caves

Set in a sheer limestone cliff at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers lie the Pak Ou Caves. Just under 2 hours away, 25 km north of Luang Prabang on the Mekong, the caves can be accessed by boat ($10 USD) or tuk-tuk ($25 USD). If you took the slowboat then you may have noticed them on your way to Luang Prabang.

As a special place of worship for many centuries, thousands of mini Buddha statues fill both the upper and lower caves. Underwhelmed or not, the fact remains that the Royal Family has been making pilgrimages here since the 16th century and the caves are treasured as one of the most important religious sites in all of Laos.

20. Drink Beer Lao

From the second we set foot in Laos we vibed with the slow peaceful way of life and fell in love with their beverage of the people, Beer Lao. There’s nothing like putting back a few cold, tall bottles of Laos’ finest on a hot day when a big bottle will run you about $1-1.50 USD. Brewed using locally grown jasmine rice, malt imported from France and Belgium, and hops and yeast from Germany, there’s a reason this brewski is the best selling and leading brand in Lao.

Situated on a hill in South East Luang Prabang, also known as Wat Phol Phao, Pahn Phao translates to “Peacefulness Temple”. We wouldn’t say it’s a “can’t miss” but if you’re in the area or bored and looking to explore, it’s worth a detour.
