The Best Tacos in Playa del Carmen

In Mexico, there is no “Taco Tuesday.” Every day is an opportunity to discover a new taqueria and add to the rankings of your favorites. We went on a hunt for the best tacos in Playa del Carmen, sampling from street carts and restaurants alike.

Over the course of a month of living in Playa, we found ourselves returning to a few familiar spots where the tacos delivered each and every time. Read on to find out which are the best tacos in Playa del Carmen and where you can find them.

El Fogón

El Fogón is located in Centro Playa del Carmen. This spot is almost always packed to the gills, especially at prime lunch and dinner hours. Expect the two-floor establishment to be filled and you may have to wait a few minutes to be seated. The wait is well worth it.

Specialty

This is the home of some of the best al pastor tacos we had in our 5 months living in Mexico. The meat is so flavorful and it kept bringing us back. The chicken quesadilla is out of this world as well and is a must-order item. Also worthy of trying: sirloin & chorizo.

Cost

  • 2 al pastor tacos (38 pesos)
  • 2 sirlon tacos (44 pesos)
  • 2 chorizo tacos (38 pesos)
  • 1 chicken quesadilla (78 pesos)

TOTAL – 198 pesos ($4.95 USD each)

El Sabor

El Sabor is also located in Centro Playa del Carmen on Avenida Benito Juárez. This place was one of our mainstays and was a favorite dinner spot on the walk back from the beach.

Specialty

First off, make sure you get a harina (flour) tortilla for your taco. The harina tortillas here are incredible. The winners at El Sabor are the chorizo and the arrachera (hanger steak). If you aren’t in the mood for a taco, go for the burger! The guys are running the grill right out front and they make a solid Hawaiian burger.

Cost

  • 2 al pastor tacos (32 pesos)
  • 2 chorizo tacos (32 pesos)
  • 2 arrachera tacos (44 pesos)
  • 2 Coca colas (40 pesos)

TOTAL – 148 pesos ($3.70 USD each)

La Floresta

With Playa del Carmen situated along the Riviera Maya coast, no list of the best tacos in Playa del Carmen would be complete without some tasty tacos from the sea. Yes, it’s time for fish tacos and La Floresta does it best. La Floresta can be found in the Ejidal neighborhood of Playa del Carmen.

Specialty

There are 4 options when it comes to tacos. Of course, we tried ’em all. The menu consists of marlin, crab, fried shrimp, and fried fish. The shrimp and fish are great as expected (you can’t go wrong with fried seafood). Be sure to try the marlin. We’ve never had marlin before and were pleasantly surprised.

Cost

  • 2 shrimp tacos (50 pesos)
  • 2 fish tacos (50 pesos)
  • 2 marlin tacos (50 pesos)
  • 2 crab tacos (50 pesos)
  • 1 Coca Cola & 1 beer (55 pesos)

TOTAL – 255 pesos ($6.38 USD each)
